Symposium Course Description:

In the face of globalization, increasing reliance on third parties such as CROs or CMOs, and globalization of supply chains and clinical trials, Semantic Web technologies are the only technologies that are powerful, flexible, and mature enough to handle the diverse and rapidly changing information needs of the pharmaceutical industry. Leading pharmas including Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Astra Zeneca, Novartis, and Biogen Idec are already taking advantage of these technologies in use cases ranging from supply chain management to R&D knowledge management.

Semantic Web technologies are a modern alternative to traditional approaches, which fail to respond quickly to changing requirements, are unable to accommodate information from non-traditional sources such as email, spreadsheets, and the Web, and are often out of reach to the majority of business users, analysts, and executives, requiring significant technical expertise to implement and modify.

In this Web Symposium, Lee Feigenbaum—co-chair of the W3C SPARQL Working Group, the query language of the Semantic Web—will provide an introduction to Semantic Technology suitable for both business users and architects, focusing on pragmatic, quick wins available to businesses today. In addition, Rob Gonzalez, Senior Product Manager for Cambridge Semantics, will provide an in-depth case study illustrating how Semantic Web technologies can provide a unique solution for Competitive Intelligence.
